During this tough time of corona pandemic outbreak around the world in 2020, we as a dentist facing greatest threat. Why? You must have come across that corona is an airborne disease. The virus stays in the air for a longer period of time and infect others.
We as a dentist have to work with out high speed turbines (airotor) and three way syringes. Now imagine the amount of aerosols exposure to us? Dangerous right? Yes. This is our answer. We are prone to air borune infections more than common people.
We do take past history before starting our dental treatments in routine practice. But in this time one may opt to hide the history of exposure, and make is vulnerable for covid 19 infection. Even that patient may be assymtomatic carrier, he may also not know that he is a carrier. This small mistake may put us in a life threatening situations.
We anyhow while working will wear protective eye wear, 3 ply mask, surgical gloves, but what about the air of the operatory. That carrier patient did breath in the area and airosols must have got spreaded in the certain area and our air conditioning has made it worsen by spreading it.
Most of us don’t have air purifier with all filters to purify the air. Even the highest quality air purifier will take 5-7 hours to clean 100 percent. During this time we are prone to catch this deadly virus and this shortest amount of exposure if more than enough to make us contaminated.
As carrier will infect others as well and make a whole community infected. Level 3 is a community spread. And just imagine how great damage entire community can spread. Social distancing and self qurantine is the only way to avoid mass community spread.
So, close the clinic, self qurantine your self, avoid any dental procedure. And also educate patient also to remain home qurantine. We all can defeat this pandemic together and we shall overcome this.
